The outdoor fair features more than two hundred artists from all over the country. A jury of art professionals, ensuring that only the best art is displayed, selects them. Art categories range from paintings and photography to sculpture, ceramics and jewelry. Most items are for sale and admission is free. A special tent features the works of talented area young artists. Hotel weekend packages include VIP tickets featuring an opening night party and complimentary refreshments all weekend. Galleries in the river district sponsor a monthly Art Walk, held the first Friday of each month, rain or shine, no matter what the weather is. Galleries introduce new art exhibits during the walk and often feature local artists. Live music and refreshments complement the free event.
Other Fort Myers Festivals to Attend
The Gulf Coast Fine Art Festival features talented artists from all over the country. Held at the Gulf Coast Town Center, a large, open shopping center, artists must undergo a strict review process before they are invited to participate. The outdoor show includes a wide variety of art including metal, glass, wood, stone, fiber, and ceramics, as well as paintings, photography and sculpture. The early spring weekend show is free. Bell Tower Shops, a high-end shopping center, hosts an annual free art fair in the spring. Located south of downtown, the center features a beautifully landscaped outdoor mall where local artists display their work.
Festivals held North of Fort Myers
Cape Coral, located just north of Fort Myers, closes down its main street for the Cape Coral Festival of the Arts in order to accommodate hundreds of artist participants. The festival draws more than one hundred thousand people during the annual January weekend event. The festival is free. Art categories include fine crafts, jewelry, painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media, a form of art that combines paint, photography or other techniques. Perfect for a family outing, the festival includes activities such as rock wall climbing. Local restaurants also provide food. For a glimpse of old time Florida, head to Matlacha, a small village on Pine Island, to see its annual art show in February. Held inside at the Matlacha Community Building, local artists display their work featuring Florida landscapes, birds, flowers and wildlife.
