The History of the ArtFest

The ArtFest returns this weekend for its 15th year. The art festival includes a special exhibit of works from some of the original Florida Highwaymen. These self-taught African American artists produced prolific works depicting iconic Florida landscapes beginning in the 1950s. Facing racial and cultural barriers and the fact that galleries simply would not show their work, the Highwaymen took to selling their works door-to-door or along roadsides. Now the Highwaymen have been called the last great American art movement of the 20th century and original works are sought after by collectors around the world.

Other things you can Enjoy

ArtFest Fort Myers, Southwest Florida’s premier art festival and largest weekend event, takes place the first weekend in February every year. Join art lovers and collectors, along the river, to enjoy and purchase the works of two hundred fabulous professional artists from across the country and around the world. Majestic palms, continuous background music, and savory food make a perfect backdrop for this fine art festival. ArtFest Fort Myers is a community event that includes a high school art competition, art demonstrations, and free children’s craft area. Parking is abundant in adjacent city street, parking lots and multi-story garages and admission is free.

The ArtFest is Fun for the Whole Family

When you are visiting Fort Myers, Florida, there are plenty of things you can see and do with your family. If you fly in, make sure to rent a car so you are able to travel to the attractions and events you want to see. This allows you the flexibility without fitting in the schedule of other transportation. Going to the ArtFest is a fun activity that everyone in the family will enjoy. This takes place along the Caloosahatchee River along Edwards Drive. This part of downtown was where inventors and industry pioneers once worked. Both the serious art lover and novice collector will find ArtFest Fort Myers the perfect place to learn about the world of art and add to or begin a unique collection. Artists from over thirty different states display paintings in oil and acrylic, watercolors, drawings in pastels, charcoal, pen and ink and graphite, 2D and 3D mixed media works and collages, photography and digital artworks, bronze and metal sculpture, wood working, ceramics, pottery, glass fusion and glass art, hand-crafted art jewelry, leather works and more. These are the best of the best, as more than 850 artists apply each year for inclusion in this juried show, and many of these artists are seldom seen in Southwest Florida.
